Driving in New Zealand
New Zealand road rules generally follow international standards. Some key points to note:
- Visitors driving in New Zealand do not need an international driver's licence but must carry their local driver's licence at all times.
- Drive on the left-hand side of the road.
- Give way to the right.
- Vehicles turning left must give way to traffic turning right.
- Speed limits are in kilometres per hour (kph) - 1 kph = 0.621 mph OR 1 mph = 1.61 kph.
- The speed limit in towns and cities is usually 50 kph (31 mph).
- The speed limit on the open road is 100 kph (62 mph).
- New Zealand has strict drink driving laws. The best policy is never to drink and drive. Some guidelines.
- It is required by law that seat belts are worn at all times by the driver and all passengers. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure passengers under 15 years are safely restrained.
